Outgoing Chair of Indigenous Youth Arts Org, Vena Beetson, Announces Resignation with Mixed Emotions

February 14, 2024 - After a decade of dedicated service, Vena Beetson, the Chairperson and Director of Digi Youth Arts (DYA), has announced her resignation with a combination of sadness and excitement for the opportunities it brings.

What initially began as a means to support Alethea has transformed into a passionate commitment to nurturing the artistic endeavours of young Indigenous individuals.

Throughout her tenure, Vena had the privilege of volunteering alongside a multitude of gifted and talented Directors who wholeheartedly dedicated their time to the Arts. She expresses her heartfelt gratitude to these individuals for their unwavering service. Vena also extends her appreciation to the young people who have shown exceptional dedication to their Arts practice, greatly enriching the community.

Under Vena's leadership, Digi Youth Arts has achieved remarkable project outcomes that continue to thrive to this day. Notable successes include the production of albums by The Ancient Bloods and BlakSound, as well as a memorable partnership with the Queensland Museum. The collaboration resulted in the creation of a thought-provoking mural in the Whale Mall, which garnered the attention of over 2 million Australians. This powerful artwork focused on the significance of Repatriation and the importance of returning Indigenous peoples to their ancestral lands to rest among their Ancestors.

DYA has always been a welcoming and flexible organisation, embracing change and adaptability. This mindset has facilitated the successful transition in the roles of Artistic Director and Lead Producer. Vena Beetson commends DYA for its resilience and looks forward to attending numerous future productions under the guidance of new leadership.

Vena Beetson expresses her gratitude and bids farewell with the words "Mandaang Guwu," Wiradjuri for "Thank you". Her departure marks the end of an era, but the legacy she leaves behind will continue to inspire and empower Indigenous youth in their artistic pursuits.
